Types Of Strollers – Explained
The Different Types Of Strollers - Explained
In this post we are going to give you a brief overview of the different types of stroller available to you, in the hope that it will help you in your search for the perfect stroller.
Now, some strollers will fall into one or more categories so don’t get too hung up on the categorization of a stroller. The most important thing is the stroller does what you want and has all the necessary features you need.
Having said that, having an idea of different types of stroller will give you an idea on where to start your search.
Lightweight Strollers
Lightweight strollers are exactly what you would think, they are very light in weight. (Note – Some of the cheaper smaller ones are sometimes referred to as umbrella strollers because a lot of them have hooked handles and fold up easy and compact just like a umbrella). A typical lightweight stroller will be under 15 lbs and with some, we have seen as low a 6lbs.
These type of strollers are ideal for travelling abroad or for quick trips out, and tend to be a lot cheaper than other types of stroller. One thing to note is some lightweight strollers, typically the umbrella type ones, do not have seats that fully recline, so are probably not ideal for small babies.
Some of these strollers are cheaply made and are no as study as other strollers, but they serve a purpose and are an ideal as a second stroller for parents.

Standard Strollers
Standard strollers are your typically single seater strollers you see out and about and are ideal for parents with one child. You will generally find they are pretty sturdy and very durable strollers, so are built to last if you look after them, and most of them are very easy to steer and ride pretty smooth.
Most standard strollers cater for newborns right up to young infants and toddlers, and all generally come with plenty of features to see you right through all the early years of child. You will probably see a variation in price ranges, and this will depend on how many features the stroller has so look at what features you want and which you do not really need.

Travel Systems
Travel systems are your all in one solutions to baby travel and offer a great practical and convenient solution for parents. A travel system generally consists of a stroller, infant car seat and car seat base.
So from the moment your child is born, you can carry them in the infant car seat, which is easily transferable from the stroller to the car seat base by clipping it in and out, all without disturbing your sleeping child.
As your child grows and outgrows the infant car seat, the stroller can then be used on its own so you can then enjoy all the benefits of a standard stroller to see your child though those essential early years

Double (Triple) Strollers
Double strollers are a great option for parents with twins on the way, or already have a small child but have a new baby on the way. There are two types of double stroller, either a tandem stroller or side-by-side stroller. There are benefits to both types of double stroller so you just need to do your research to find out which one will suit your particular needs.
With tandem strollers one child sits at the front and one sits at the back, which can cause the odd argument as they recommend that the older child is always at the front. However, they have great maneuverability especially through narrow doorways and the like. Side by side strollers are perhaps not so great in narrow and tighter surroundings, but encourage child interaction and a good view for both.

Jogging (All Terrain) Strollers
Jogging strollers are for the athletic parents amongst you and are ideal for parents who enjoy jogging or running. As we become more health conscience and understanding the role exercise plays in preventing Postpartum Depression, the jogging stroller provides the perfect solution to look after your child but go running at the same time. Jogging strollers have 3 wheels, are lightweight and have inflated tyres, just like on any push bike, giving you maximum suspension for most types of road surface.
All terrain strollers look almost the same, but the slight difference is the front swivel wheel (The Joggers have a fixed front wheel). This swivel wheel does make the maneuverability a lot easier, so going off road has never been so easy, as well as you typical trips to the mall and other outings too.

Carragies
And finally you have the carriage style stoller which is modeled on the old-styled prams, with the large wheels and compartment space. They are ideal for newborns and provide plenty of sleeping space for you child. They are a little limited in features when compared to other strollers, and unfrotunately very few models will convert to a stroller are you child grows. Quite bulky these carriages are strictly for the mums who want a classic feel without the bells and whistles.
There are not the most practical stoller out there, due to the large wheels, but nevertheless, have that classy look about them that some people find irresistable.
